Wyevale’s “coffee ground” concept wins top design award

Wyevale Garden Centres Coffe Shop by Interior fit-out specialist The Alan Nuttall Partnership Ltd

An innovative garden centre coffee shop concept brought to life by The Alan Nuttall Partnership Ltd roasted the competition at this year’s Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.

Coffee Ground, which was launched by Wyevale Garden Centres (WGC) in September 2014 to offer customers a high quality hospitality experience, won Best Restaurant or Bar in Another Space in the UK category at the awards, which recognise design of food and beverage spaces.

This year’s competitive judging process included a panel of leading architects, designers, brand directors and chefs from all over the world, with more than 1,000 entries from over 70 countries put forward for the awards, now in their seventh year.

Nuttalls worked in close collaboration with architect Kiwi & Pom to create the Coffee Ground ‘pod’, a galvanised steel framework designed to replicate a greenhouse complemented by timber side panels and worktops manufactured from steel dipped in patina. This resulted in an oxidised pewter effect, a solution engineered by Nuttall’s to meet the brief for a slightly industrial feel.

Account Manager, Anton Cotton said:

The success of this project is down to working closely with the architects to translate their initial conceptual idea into an economically-viable solution. This enabled the client to strategically diversify its business to cater for a growing customer base.

The design is modern, yet welcoming, and the finish on the worktops looks stunning. Combine this with the wonderful aroma of roasting coffee that hits you as you enter the area and you have a real feast for the senses, something different to the usual garden centre catering offer.

Offering customers an alternative to the traditional restaurants at WGC’s 151 stores in England and Wales, Coffee Ground specialises in organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certified coffee. It is made using specialist automation that enables staff to micro roast in small batches throughout the day, filling the air with enticing aromas and creating a sense of ‘theatre’.

Every bean roasted at Coffee Ground is not only hand-picked and ethically-sourced, but recycled to produce tables, cake stands and compost for UK gardens.

Jason Danciger, Food and Beverage Director for Wyevale Garden Centres, said:

We are proud of this achievement and of how far our award-winning Coffee Ground has come since its initial conception. We are delighted that not only is the quality of our coffee praised, but also that our design consideration and our innovative use of space has been recognised.
